Why Is My Pod Leaking? Easy Fixes to Keep Your Vape Dry

There's nothing worse than reaching for your vape and finding e-liquid all over your hands, your pocket or the inside of your device. The good news? A leaking pod is one of the most common questions we get in store, and it's usually an easy fix.

In this guide we'll run through why pods and tanks leak, how to sort it out, and a few simple habits that keep your setup dry day after day.

Why Is My Pod Leaking?

Most leaks come down to a handful of everyday causes. Here are the ones we see most often:

  • Overfilling: filling right to the top leaves no room for air, so liquid gets pushed out through the airflow or the mouthpiece.
  • A worn-out coil or pod: as a coil ages, the wicking cotton can't hold liquid as well as it used to.
  • Loose or damaged seals: a fill plug that isn't pushed in properly, or a cracked pod, is an easy path for liquid to escape.
  • The wrong e-liquid for your device: thin, high-PG juices can flood a coil that's built for thicker liquid, and vice versa.
  • Temperature and pressure changes: leaving your device in a hot car or taking it on a flight can push liquid out of the pod.
  • Hard, long pulls: drawing too hard can pull extra liquid through the coil and into the mouthpiece.

Leak or Condensation?

Before you swap anything, check what you're actually dealing with. A little moisture around the pod connection or in the mouthpiece is often just condensation from normal use, and it builds up over time in every device.

If you're seeing a small film of liquid, a quick wipe is all you need. If your pod is emptying itself overnight or liquid is pooling in the device, that's a proper leak and it's time to troubleshoot.

Quick Fixes to Try First

  • Wipe everything down: remove the pod and dry the contacts, the pod base and the inside of the device with a paper towel or cotton bud.
  • Check the fill plug: make sure the silicone plug is pushed in all the way and sitting flat.
  • Fill to the line, not the top: most pods have a max-fill marker. Stop there and leave a little air space.
  • Let a new pod or coil soak: after filling, give it about five minutes before your first puff so the cotton is fully saturated.
  • Take gentle, steady draws: slow, smooth pulls work best on most pod kits.
  • Swap the pod or coil: if it's been a while, or the flavour has started to fade, a fresh one often stops the leak straight away.

Match Your Juice to Your Coil

Your coil's resistance is a handy guide to the type of liquid it likes:

  • Higher resistance coils (around 0.8Ω and up): usually built for a mouth-to-lung (MTL) draw and work well with nic salts and 50/50 liquids.
  • Lower resistance coils (below about 0.6Ω): usually built for a looser, direct-to-lung (DTL) draw and generally prefer higher-VG liquids.

Not sure which coil you've got? The resistance is normally printed on the side of the coil or the base of the pod. For example, the Vaporesso XROS 6 Starter Kit takes XROS pods in a few different resistances, including the popular XROS Mesh Pod 0.6Ω.

Everyday Habits That Keep Your Pod Dry

  • Store it upright: keeping your device standing up, mouthpiece facing up, helps liquid stay where it belongs.
  • Keep it out of the heat: South African summers are no joke, so avoid leaving your vape on the dashboard or in direct sun.
  • Travel with an empty or half-full pod: pressure changes on flights are one of the biggest causes of leaks.
  • Give it a regular clean: a quick wipe of the pod connection every few days stops build-up before it becomes a mess.
  • Replace pods on time: keep a spare or two handy so you're never stretching a tired pod past its best.

Our team's tip: if you've got a pod kit like the OXVA Xlim Pro 3, keeping a couple of spare pods in your bag makes swapping out a tired one quick and easy.
