VAPING WHILE TRAVELLING: THE DOS AND DON’TS

January 24, 2024

Planning a holiday involves addressing numerous questions: Have you arranged transport to and from the airport? Are all lights at home switched off? Can you bring vapes on a plane?

Vaping during travel is a nuanced subject. Depending on your destination and your reliance on your E-Cigarette, navigating the do's and don'ts of vaping while on the move can be uncertain.

But fear not: Vape King is here to illuminate the vaping regulations for South African airlines.

Discover the vaping guidelines for major South African airports and the permissible amount of E-Liquid for air travel. When seeking delightful vape juices for your vacation, explore Vape Kings extensive range of vaping products.

DO: RESEARCH SOUTH AFRICAN VAPING REGULATIONS!
Before heading to the airport, familiarize yourself with South African regulations concerning international and domestic flights with vaping equipment.

Can you take a vape on a plane?
Yes, but you must carry it on your person or in checked hand luggage. Your options are keeping it in your pocket or storing it securely in your carry-on.

Given that most vapes have lithium batteries, deemed a flight risk by airport security, keeping it on your person is the safest choice. However, this doesn't grant permission to use it!

Even though your vape is within reach, you can't use it in the plane's cabin or many areas of the airport. Vaping, like smoking, falls under the same laws as traditional tobacco products.

Uniform vaping regulations apply in South African airports. For instance, airlines like Mango state that devices with lithium batteries can be stored in the cabin but not used. Other carriers, such as FlySafair, uphold similar rules.

DON'T: ASSUME VAPES ARE LEGAL IN YOUR HOLIDAY DESTINATION
While vapes and E-Cigarettes have been legal in South Africa for almost a decade, government regulations are more stringent in some countries, where these products might be illegal. Before embarking, do not assume that your holiday destination permits vapes!

Vape King has compiled a comprehensive list of countries where vapes are illegal, ensuring you know when to bid your E-Cig farewell:

Bahrain, Barbados, Bhutan, Brazil, Brunei
Cambodia, Colombia, Costa Rica
East Timor, Egypt, Ethiopia
The Gambia, Hong Kong, India, Iran
Jamaica, Japan, Jordan, North Korea, Kuwait
Lao, Lebanon, Macao, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico
Nepal, Nicaragua, Oman, Palestine, Venezuela

DO: CHECK WHERE YOU CAN VAPE IN AIRPORTS
Given that vapes are subject to the same laws as tobacco products, some airports designate smoking areas for vaping, while others prohibit it altogether.

Stay informed with a list of the three major airports in South Africa and their vaping policies:

OR Tambo International Airport: Vaping is only permitted in designated smoking areas.
Cape Town International Airport: Vaping is allowed in designated smoking zones outside the terminal buildings.
King Shaka International Airport: Vaping is permitted only in designated smoking areas outside the terminal buildings.

DON'T: OVERPACK YOUR E-LIQUIDS
In the UK for example, TRPR stipulates that E-Liquid tanks in reusable and disposable vapes must not exceed 2ml. The maximum volume of nicotine-containing e-liquid in one refill container is restricted to 10ml.

South African government hand luggage restrictions mandate a single 20cm x 20cm transparent, resealable plastic bag, with all liquid containers holding no more than 100ml.

Carefully select your favorite E-Liquids, ensuring they are visible in your clear bag.

DO: ENJOY VAPING WHILE ON HOLIDAY!
Adhering to airport rules and verifying that your destination allows vapes enables you to enjoy your E-Cigarette during your vacation. Depending on your stay's duration, you might need to purchase E-Liquids abroad.

Once you confirm you're in a vape-friendly country, acquiring E-Liquids should be straightforward. Be aware of varying rules on nicotine strength and purchasing locations, for example in the UK, the TRPR does not allow retailers to sell E-Liquids with more than 20mg of nicotine. But in the USA, similarly to South Africa, you can purchase E-Liquids ranging from 0 to 50 mg!

Displaying consideration for local customs and laws while vaping during travel is a matter of simple etiquette!
